When I find myself in this situation I start at the end of the thread and work backwards. Yes, it sounds crazy, but it gets you into the middle of the current happening. Then I slowly work backward to see what I missed. I used to have a friend as a kid that liked to read comic books from back to front. Must have rubbed off on me.
