10 Greatest Vocal Performances In Classic Rock

Singers tend to receive a bad reputation when it comes to rock and roll. Many people think that these guys just have a lucky break by making a living screaming into a microphone. On the other side, there have been many vocalists that have really shown the time and effort that goes into singing rock and roll.

A lot of people tend to forget that the voice is an instrument unto itself, and all of these singers utilize that instrument to its fullest potential. These songs not only showcase the intensity of the person's singing, but also the unique control of their range. Some of these tunes don't even feature one vocalist, but a vocal team working in conjunction with each other to create something truly spectacular.

Above all, these performances show these singers as fully functioning musicians, who put their heart and soul into their craft to make magic come out of their vocal cords. Sure, they might not be playing a guitar or tearing up the drums, but the sheer power coming from the back of their throat will make your hair stand up on end.

In 2004, she sued Pink Floyd and EMI for songwriting royalties on the basis that her contribution to “The Great Gig in the Sky” constituted co-authorship with keyboardist Richard Wright. Originally, she was paid the standard flat fee of £30 for Sunday studio work. In 2005, an out-of-court settlement was reached in Torry’s favour, although the terms of the settlement were not disclosed.[8] All releases after 2005 carry an additional credit for “Vocal composition by Clare Torry”[9] for the “Great Gig in the Sky” segment of the booklet or liner notes.

Heart (Ann Wilson) Crazy on You, Barracuda... not to mention a host of other songs.

...and then I heard Gretchen Wilson sing Barracuda... wow.

Ann kills it on "Mistral Wind," too. One of my Heart favorites. And I went to see Gretchen Wilson in concert just to hear her sing Barracuda. The only singer I've ever heard who can truly pull off Ann's vocals (and I played in a Heart tribute band for years).

I really like "Gimme Shelter," but the highlight of that song is the guitar work, not the vocal.

Actually, Gimme Shelter is a perfect example of how a great song is larger than the parts. Check out the isolated tracks here:

Come on man. No “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” or “Unchained Melody”?

Thanks, but when I try to play those videos I get a message saying it’s not allowed for some reason.

She certainly did deserve a writing credit. There is an interview with her on YouTube about how that song came about. The band didn’t give her much direction, because they really couldn’t describe what they did want. They could only say they didn’t like some things that she had tried. So the composition really is hers with minimal direction.

This isn't classic or rock, but if anyone is interested in a good current singer, Avi Kaplan is very talented. Almost all of his work is very high quality.

Agree! glad to see her royalty checks as she gets older. Check out the woman who sings her lungs out on the live PULSE version. I saw her name but cannot find her again ,,...Seems like she ruined her voice by getting so emotionally involved. Going by her wikipedia page.

The woman with the long blond hair.

If you're a Delp fan, and I am, you'll enjoy this YouTube post where they separated Delp's vocals from the music on More than a Feeling. This puts the incredible range and clarity of his voice on full display.
