When millions don’t die, some people are going to be secretly disappointed. You’re correct, part of it is the human nature of not wanting to admit to accepting new data that does not fit with previous conclusions.
The other part is a deep seated need with some people that to feel significant, they want to think they lived during an historically significant time. They get very upset if you tell them, no, historically this virus is not the equivalent of the bubonic plague, the Antonine plague, polio, or smallpox.
It might be useful to compare COVID 19 statistics to the 1957 - 1958 H2N2 (influenza). Deaths 116,000 out of a US population of ~170 million. (at the same deaths per million, that would be approximately 232,000 today). Global deaths of more than 1 million globally when the world population was approximately 2.9 billion (would be equivalent to about 2.3 million deaths today). While COVID 19 is not trivial, it is no where near serious enough to justify the steps taken to deal with it. Governments are taking advantage of a media propaganda induced hysteria to seize dictatorial power.
