Got a fresco copy of one of those panels on my wall right now. Really great detail. I missed a chance getting to see it in person. Can’t wait to get back there and see the real thing.

Just what I was thinking as I was collecting and thinking about how to organize the Pompeii images. Usually we get glimpses into the past but never the depth of insight the covering ash protected. For example, I never knew that it was common to have a mosaic of a chained dog at the entry to your house. Some welcome mat.

I’m really excited by the mosaics and the frescoes of the gardens, trees and birds. And the marble statues. And... The place looks immense. Wear good shoes!

Roman copies of Greek original art pieces were always a little stiff. By the way, so were the Indian copies of the Chinese originals when you look at the Buddhas. I was noticing that some of the restorations are just not up to the quality of the originals. And I’ve been looking at so many images I’m wondering if they’re tracing the original artists painting in different homes.

A photo of Secretariat? I have the actual head mounted on the wall here. ;^)
I'm also a non-drinker. There is a difference between a party and an Dionysian orgy, however. :^) The ancient cult wasn't an asset, although I have often enjoyed that wall painting from Villa of the Mysteries.

>>There is a difference between a party and an Dionysian orgy

But from what I read of Silicon Valley, not a lot of difference between that and the parties the swinger masters of the tech universe throw. The difference seems to be that they don’t hire anyone to illustrate the walls of their homes to keep the memories alive. So the future will know about Pompeii’s wild parties, but not the ones in CA.

Poor Secretariat’s head. I visited the grave of Man of War and cried. Try something with that!

For awhile, Ellison liked 4 blondes per day, under 25. IIRC.

there's at least one such dog mosaic that actually has the message in Latin, "beware the dog" right in the tessarae.

I’ve got a book on some of the “forbidden art” from Pompeii.
EROS IN POMPEII.
Rather interesting!

Probably not a lot different than today’s private selfies. Except for being painted on the wall where everyone could see them. There were a number of small brothels where pictures were collected, and one larger one (10 rooms). Other than that, the pictures seemed to be on private bedroom walls. And some of the images implying delusions of grandeur were on the front of the house as images of abundance rather than sexuality. Most that I saw were of execrable quality. Obviously brothels didn’t have a large profit margin to hire the better artists. There was one exquisite mosaic from a mansion but, other than that, not impressive art.

Secretariat was the greatest, IMHO, and I think it was also the result of the latest gallop poll.
