That is true of ordinary UV light. It is not true of sterilizers using light only in the UV-C spectrum, which is unfortunately injurious to human vision. That makes it too hazardous to use in sterilizing rooms.

The Chinese use huge bus barns with roll-up doors with huge UV-C lights to sterilize 6-10 buses at a time, in two long lines, with humans excluded from the whole building. They roll the buses in at night when they're out of service. I don't know how long the buses are stuck in there.

And there are small box-shaped UV-C sterilizers for sterilizing small items like N95 masks. I have a foldable one. It has an opague plastic fabric around it.

I haven't done any research on using UV to kill Covid-19 and other viruses, but there is an ad for a light to use in the home to sterilize rooms. And it does says the light is harmful to human vision.
