Fortunately my parents were medical professionals. They didn’t do that. Yes I caught measles from someone who had it. I have never been as sick as I was then. I’ve had not H1N1 and Hong Kong Flu. They didn’t come close

In 1960 is was the best and safest option.
Widely recommended by family doctors and grandmas everywhere.

Before vaccines, the parents choices were:

1) let your kiddo get measles as a kiddo. Risk is small. Immunity is permanent.

2) skip 1 and your grown kiddo gets measles as an adult. Major complications and even death MUCH more likely.

Chose 1 or 2.

Smart parents, before vaccines, chose 1.

After the advent of antibiotics in the late 40’s, deaths from measles complications (mostly pneumonia) declined to basically nothing for kids.
