For the general population masks mainly are effective when worn by infected persons.
If all wear them then we catch those that are infected whether they don’t. know it. or do know but don’t want to be. stigmatized.
Shouldn’t my mask also be protecting you from me?
I tried a micro-cloth and breathing is tuff.
The Quicker-picker-upper.
A mask worn by an infected person will also reduce the energy of particulates expressed by that person. Thus, even sneezing will not expel as much mucus nor will the mucus getting through the mask go as far a distance.
The test shows effectiveness in terms of particles per CCM. But it doesn’t show efficiency. Based on their test parameters, plastic wrap would be even more effective in reducing particle intake. But at a rather significant cost to efficiency.
So while six layers of paper towels might be effective, it might also make breathing a lot more difficult. Especially for those who may be sick.
Whatever paper towels were still on the shelves are now gone.
The people with masks are always touching their mask
2 surgical masks with pater towels or HEPA between.
Best way to disinfect is to air dry for 48_72 hours.
Hang it behind window glass that gets sun.
Cut the big end off of a 2 liter soda bottle after removing the label.
Place mask in the bottle and place in sun. (
Should do the trick.
What mystifies me is how unprepared for this people were.
Hospitals running out of masks and PPE? They weren't prepared for something they knew was eventually coming?
There's only a small percentage of hospitals hit hard with this and since all elective procedures are cancelled most hospitals shouldn't be using any more than normal.
Oh, and Remington offered to make PPE for NY but Fredo's brother hates guns so much he said "No thanks!.
He only hates guns unless they're carried by his bodyguards.
There was another paper/study that I read that said a paper towel filter in a cloth mask holder was pretty durn good.
Throw the paper towel away and wash the mask after each use.
Wet a paper towel and I bet it would capture even more.
the point of all virus protection mechanisms is to *reduce the probability of infection* period.
as anyone mathematician knows in elementary probability, the layering of several defense mechanisms multiply the protective effect.
to propose a worst case, once size fits all protective mechanism against virus, is counter productive, potentially damaging (making the cure worse than the disease) and will fail due to impracticability anyway.
that is why multiple effective measures like, sanitizer, hand washing, mask, social distancing under certain conditions, etc., etc, all layer up to make for a near 100% effect.
The PeakProsperity guy was referencing a study done by this outfit in California.
They tested multiple materials and said a cloth mask with two layers of blue shop towels, was equivalent to an N95.
They had 2 specific brands of shot towels.
His wife uses a sewing machine but strips of strong sticky (packing) tape should serve for the hemming.
Ducktape?
My neighbor sent me a video of an Italian man fashioning a mask out of a maxi pad that had four sides of adhesive. I cracked up and then realized that all those layers would probably be a good filter.
Can you comfortably breathe through 6 layers of paper towel?
What about handy-wipes... Will they work?
In the true story “The Hot Zone”, researchers into Ebola at Fort Detrick, MD were looking at viruses no larger than the period (.) at the end of a sentence...so I don’t believe any of this hokum...We’re being dazzled with stats which mean bonkers...I was told that wearing a “dust” mask wouldn’t trap the virus...if any old cloth can trap it, why can’t a “dust” mask? And I would say a solid material as in a dust mask should do it better! But what do I know? I don’t get paid for my opinion...
I would like to suggest.... the squad, Pelosi, Nadler, schumer, shitt, a large garbage bag around the head with a zip tie around the neck
