Farmers warn UK faces shortage of fruit and veg due to coronavirus and need volunteers
The nation faces a shortage of fruit and vegetables unless 40,000 people sign up to pick crops at £15-an-hour.
So far 30,000 Brits have joined the new ‘Land Army’ to ‘pick for Britain’ and ‘feed the nation’ but there needs to be a total of 70,000 by early May.
...Following pressure from the National Farmer’s Union (NFU) the government accelerated the race to find workers by allowing farmers and food plants with staff shortages to be allowed to sign up furloughed workers.
This development means they will be able to keep earn an extra £350-a-week picking fruit and vegetables on top of 80% of their usual pay up to £2,500-a-month.
