My reading about HCQ shows that it has the ability to increase the pH (acidity) at the cellular level, which reduces or eliminates the ability of the virus to enter the cell and take over it’s reproductive mechanism. Viruses can’t reproduce on their own, so if you block it from the cell you block the symptoms, and the disease. The other main effect HCQ has is to modulate the body’s immune response. If the immune system goes into overload it can create the cytokine storm in which antibodies attacks the body itself, leading to death. So HCQ has value both as a prophylactic to prevet getting the disease and as a treatment for those who already have it. But sooner, rather than later!

The maps of infection showed that Africa and South America seemed largely immune ... it was considered that might be partly due to their being in summer months ... when somebody realized those are also areas heavily treated for malaria over prior decades and there were built up immunity.
