This is absurd - do they think he'll transmit coronavirus to a passing shark? The idiots who arrested him did far more to damage the concept of social-distancing than one surfer out enjoying the waves.

This coronavirus crisis is giving a lot of local politicians a taste of the power over people's lives that bureaucrats in East Germany used to have. It's going to be tough getting them to give up that power.

I do think this is absurd, but on a normal 3-4’ swell day at Malibu there can be hundreds of people in the water. Do I think the possibility of transmission is very small even in these conditions? Yes. But if you allow one guy to go on a SUP why can’t everyone else be out there surfing? The videos going around online of the arrest are pretty crazy. The boats converging on him as he tries to escape under the Malibu pier.

My town shut down our beach and boardwalk to locals only. We are trying to keep the New Yorkers away. I normally surf a beach break with at most two or three other people even within several blocks of me. Our water temps are in the 40s so I don’t think I have to worry to much about crowded conditions like Cali.
