Accused meth dealer freed jail over coronavirus concerns locked up again by Brooklyn federal judge for trying to cut off ankle monitor

He wasn’t even out long enough to say coronavirus!

An accused meth dealer was tossed back in the slammer just a day after he was freed over coronavirus concerns because he tried to cut off his ankle monitor, law enforcement officials told the Daily News.

Rasedur Raihan, who was free on bail, got some mercy from a Brooklyn Federal Court magistrate judge on March 12 when the feds tried to lock him up for failed drug tests and missed treatments.

Locking up Raihan would have been “a relatively easy call” in mid-February, Magistrate Judge James Orenstein said at the time.

But with the virus starting to spread, Orenstein felt locking up a low-level offender at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn involved a different set of risks.

“Our community includes the people incarcerated at the MDC — those who work there and those who live and interact with those who work there," Orenstein said.

“And let’s not kid ourselves. The more people we crowd into that facility, the more we’re increasing the risk to the community,” the judge said. "I’m really hesitant to respond to drug usage with incarceration given that risk.”

So Raihan became one of a number of inmates freed from federal jail over coronavirus fears.

But he wasn’t free for long. He immediately broke one of the rules of his release by trying to cut off his ankle monitoring bracelet.

Orenstein wasn’t so merciful the second time around — he ordered Raihan held without bail.

Raihan was arrested in 2019 after a Customs and Border Protection agent seized a parcel shipped to him from Bangladesh that contained 134 grams of meth in pill form, authorities said.

After the feds arrested Raihan they searched his home and found another approximately 50 grams of meth, said law enforcement.

Raihan is charged with conspiracy to distribute and possess methamphetamine.

Are we sure that wasn't his personal stash?
