It sounds like double knitting.
What was the item? Sweater, blanket, what?
If you could describe it more detail one of us might have the pattern.
It is an afghan. Both sides have the same design only in reverse colors. First you make a stitch for one side then a stitch for the other side. It was very difficult and I am a pretty good knitter.
