Your comment triggered something that may be worth elaborating a bit.

We know people have been increasingly turning to the internet for news and information, from websites, social media, streaming video, etc. But all those things depend on the ability of internet service providers to maintain sufficient network bandwidth.

At the same time, the switch to digital broadcast TV and move to UHF has reduced the coverage area of most over-the-air TV stations, compared with analog television. On the other hand, they acquire their network programming content via satellite, and are not reliant on the internet.

The bottom line is, in the event of a major internet collapse we would be back to the pre-internet days where the primary source of news and information would be broadcast radio and television, which would mean content from ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, CNN, and relatively few others. Except for locally-written stories, newspapers would be unable to obtain content or access their centralized printing presses without the internet. Shortwave and AM radio would probably see a rebirth as the only media that can cover wide areas of the population in the absence of the internet.

Just food for thought.

That’s why I keep my old shortwave radio just in case.

Amateur radio license since 1990. Got that covered as a backup. I test it daily.

Yes, good points about our new digital infrastructure.
