Exploration would mean a supervised visit, if Hawass had anything to do with it. Otherwise, academic affiliation (and presumably kickbacks) or visit as a tourist which is what the late J.A. West used to do when he conducted his occult tour of Egypt.

According to Temple in his other explorations of the Sphinx and the two associated temples, Hawass approved them, but they explorations were unsupervised or no more supervised than one by Lehrer or some other accredited person. He was NOT visiting as a tourist and some sites and areas were closed or never open to tourists.
