Mom, dad and me went to NYC for the Bi-Centennial and the tall ships, drove out from Minnesota. On a bus in NYC and we were struggling with the map to go see some museum or some place.
A woman saw us and said “Just get off the bus when I do and follow me.”
So we did, and she said just follow her. I can’t recall how far it was or how many turns, but do recall thinking that there was no way we would have found it!
My dad thanked her and said something like “How fortunate for us that you live out this direction.”
“Oh no - I’m still 20 blocks down on the bus line, but its a nice day for a walk, and I could see you needed the help.”
Ha! Typical. New Yorkers don’t bother you unless you need them; then they are all there. Kind of like the West Coast and probably many other areas.
I once did that for a little group going to Lincoln Center. I knew it would be hard to explain how to get there once they got to the area, with the streets going all crazy ways, so I walked up with them. Then I think I took the bus the rest of the way.
So nice that she did that.
At the time of the bicentennial I was living in an apartment with 7 windows on the Hudson River. There were two older women who lived in another apartment on the floor, so they came over to see the ships, plus my entire Bible study group. Sweet memories.
Yankee spirit! Love it. Have good friends from NY. Once you break the ice, it's all good.
