I am high risk and almost everyone I know is hi risk or has a family member at risk

My grandparents and parents survived the Spanish flu and the Great Depression

Economies come back very slowly, and sometimes not at all. You should isolate, as should other high risk. Everyone else needs to get back to work/life to get herd immunity ASAP. If we don’t, it’s not just jobs at risk, but pensions, SS, Medicare, and the healthcare system as a hole. The gov cannot print or borrow our way to prosperity.

In the meantime people will suffer true harm from an economic depression. I can’t understand how people here don’t see that. Many more will die from that than this virus.

Empirically, a poor economy leads to higher rates of drug/alcohol abuse, sexual abuse, child abuse, physical abuse, charities unable to help the poor and elderly, suicides, violent crime (rape/murder), nutritional deficits, lower quality of healthcare, etc.

Is it really that hard for people on FR to understand that economic conditions directly relate to health conditions?

What do you say about the 50,000 that died from the flu last year, do we shut the entire country down every time we have a new virus coming into the country!!

I too am high risk. However, I don't think I should infringe on every man's liberty and livelihood because of it. My personal responsibility lies in doing the best I can to prevent exposure, to myself and others, the virus without infringing anyone's freedoms.

This COVID-19 is not the only risk to my well being and it is MY duty to take precautions. If I choose to not, I have abrogated my duty. I will have no one to blame but myself.

My tag line has been the same for years but is most appropriate today.

How many businesses will not survive this? How many families will fight to put food on the table? $1200 from the government in 3 weeks won't buy groceries now. There were 10,000 suicides attributed to the great recession. How many Americans dead to date from this? Only 650 or so. If we care about deaths, take them all into account and then proceed accordingly.

People can’t come back if we have Venezuela health care because we are all broke and no one is paying in.

High risk shelter in place. Let the rest of us work. Otherwise we can’t take care of you.
