Trust, but verify. With the NYTs definitely verify. The above stat that says a birth every 4.4 minutes and death every 9.1 minutes immediately did not compute for me to 50,000 deaths per year because I knew NYC has about 215,000 birth a year. The State of NY and the City of NY both make it excruciating difficult to find death data. The most recent I could find was for 2008 to 2016. The actual total is double you number. Bronx: 9705 Kings: 15978 New York: 53891 Queens: 14528 Richmond: 3715 Total: 97817 Although the reporter may consider the outer boroughs not to be a part of NYC.

Thanks for checking, while even about 7 deaths every 63 minutes provides some perspective.
