You don’t have to look that far back. Just look at the 1918 Influenza. It wiped out between 20-50 million. When you don’t know the tens of millions it killed...that is a big deal.

I am comparing the “novel” aspect of the virus—not the results.

Historically, this happened pretty often. Travel and communication has changed to the point where transmission takes days instead of weeks and months. That is what makes it unquie.

And why people will study the viral aspect (pun kind of intended) of the social impact of this for decades.

In this case .
Communist China leaked a bio-weapon and allowed it to spread intentionally externally to the West by Air and sea and land while
shutting down its own internal transportation and stock market .
The flights out of China never stopped and they had the gaul to complained when we shut down the flights .
The West never called them out or even punished them for their actions .
The West is so weak and divided now .
