I wonder why the EU issued this statement. What can they gain from it? Was it that they wanted to criticize Trump? The statement says, we are powerless to stop this, but we are unable to do anything about it.

I am sure the Euro Peons are in a panic. Hatred of Trump can redirect their anger. This is also a really low-cost way of looking like the EU is doing something (they “say” they are). That may quell the frightened peasants a bit, too.

Thre EU is increasingly impotent on the world stage, humiliated and wounded by Brexit, and their restive Eastern European states. Protestations like this are their only weapon.
