In the end I think they will find a mutation occurred. I know there are the S and L Variants already. Perhaps more.
Depending on the variant, and the genetics of the people (and whether or not they smoke) the virus would get a more secure grip. On top of that, Italy is OLD. And I am not talking about “ruins.”
I agree generally with all you wrote there. I am surprised it hasn’t hit as hard in the south where living conditions aren’t as sanitary etc. But, more small villages and less urban areas in that direction might have something to do with it.
I know old people in my dad’s village who have never been 20 miles from home.
