5 Coronavirus cases, one death in South Dakota

South Dakota has five COVID-19 cases including one death possibly linked to the strain of Coronavirus causing a global outbreak, Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) confirmed.

State health officials said the person who died was a man between the age of 60 and 69 from Pennington County. They are waiting for medical examiner confirmation but said he tested positive for COVID-19. Noem said he had underlying medical conditions. The man died earlier Tuesday.

The governor’s office said four other people with cases, all travel-related, are not hospitalized at this time:

Male 40-49 – Beadle County

Male 50-59 – Charles Mix County

Female 30-39 – Davison County

Male 40-49 – Minnehaha County

The state doesn’t believe the cases are inter-related. They all involved travel outside of South Dakota, but not necessarily internationally.

I live in very rural Kentucky. I felt pretty good about being isolated here. Two cases 15 rural Kentucky miles away. One infectee worked at Walmart so, Lord, we surely all will get it now.

Me too...I live in Paducah...nobody comes here except for quilt week (yes, it's a thing) and i'm going to stay far away if it goes on as planned. Also it's very humid here so I'm hoping that will make it harder to transmit...at least outdoors.

I believe that this virus has infected hundreds of thousands of people in the United States already. In fact, I believe that I had it myself. In addition, there were dozens of people that worked in my office that had symptoms akin to the symptoms of this virus. This whole panic is a joke. There has not been one person in this country who has died from the virus who was healthy, did not have a significant underlying condition such as emphysema, or who is frail and elderly.

Not to be conspiratorial or anything but since more cases seem to be popping up in random locations is it conceivable someone or some group is seeding this infection in different areas to spread the disease?

And there have been 16,000 flu related deaths in the U.S. so far this season. Is anyone providing a John Hopkins type map to follow the course of the regular flu?! I suspect the regular flu is popping up in random locations, but nobody suggests a conspiracy for that "normal" occurrence.

The regular flu is far more deadly outside of the very elderly cohort than this new bug. Hard to see why anybody would use the Wu flu as a weapon given that.

Thankfully, despite all the virus hoaxing and fake news it seems regular folks are ignoring this hysteria. Florida spring break hotels and car rental prices have remained steady the past two weeks.

As a South Dakotan, I don’t think this is what is going on. It’s a geographical thing. South Dakota towns are spread apart like this. We are a big state with many miles between towns, with only a couple of airports. So people fly into Sioux Falls or Rapid City and then spread out all over the state. We have towns of a few thousand people here and there with 25, 50 or even 100 miles between towns. We have hundreds of little towns.

South Dakota goes from zero cases to five with one death seemingly overnight. Strange. Did the guy who died even make it to a hospital?

My grandaughter is a physicians assistant at the Rapid City Medical center. She said all five had traveled nationally recently, but all were relatively healthy, and younger than the demographic presented internationally.

Mr. RR and I both have medical conditions that will keep us home for a while.

I would not put that kind of manipulation outside what the enemy might do. Meanwhile, our investment portfolios are getting gnawed away. Which tells me, that they don’t care a whit about us little people. They are just desperate to get Trump out of office.

US now has at least 972 people with the Coronavirus. We’ll probably go over 1000 tomorrow. It’s moving fast.

I’ve been wondering about this. I rarely get colds or related infections. This year I had a cold/cough/sore throat that lasted two months. I was miserable. After about two weeks I went to urgent care and was told it was viral, no testing. Over a month later my husband dragged me back to urgent care and a CT scan showed something in my lungs; I had also developed pleurisy from all the coughing. It took quite awhile for the antibiotics and steroids to start making me feel better.

This was all before the news coverage of the corona virus. I can’t help but wonder if I had a relatively mild version of it.

It's being reported that the guy who died was in his 60's.

Noem said he had underlying medical conditions. The man died earlier Tuesday.

Why didn't the 'underlying conditions' such as heart failure, kill him and he also had the virus?

I know the media is pimping this virus for political reasons while trying to appear 'fair and rational', just the facts, ma'am.

The chinkvirus has been here for 3 months and we are going to hit 1,000 cases.

The flu season started 5 months ago and we have 34 Million cases with thousands of deaths in the USA.

The media causes panic and panic leads to the results they want...it's Trump's fault.

Well, this didn’t take long....

“Updated March 11, 2020

A patient with confirmed COVID19 is an inpatient at the University of Michigan Health System. The patient is in stable condition.

We are confident that we are using proper precautions with this patient who was carefully isolated to minimize the risk of exposure to our employees and patients.

Based on that, risk of infection is low for our employees and visitors, even if you work in our hospitals or near the unit where the patient is isolated. Risk is considered high if you have prolonged exposure to someone with symptoms without appropriate protective equipment.

This is a rapidly evolving situation. U-M officials and medical experts, in close coordination with the state and local public health experts, are closely monitoring for developments and will offer additional guidance to the Michigan Medicine community as soon as it is available.”

****************

They almost sound excited about it....
