New York's solution to hand sanitizer shortage: Prison labor, hourly wages below $1

ALBANY, N.Y. – What do you do when fear over the new coronavirus leads to a shortage of hand sanitizer?

If you're the state of New York, you make it yourself. Or you have prisoners do it.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Monday the state had begun producing its own line of hand sanitizer, known as NYS Clean. The state will distribute the products to schools, local governments, prisons and other public entities free of charge.

The low price of making the sanitizer in house – $6.10 a gallon – will allow the state and local governments to save big, particularly when a coronavirus-fueled run on the product has led to rising prices if you're even able to find it at all.

But it's the way the state is containing its costs that has some lawmakers and advocacy groups alarmed: By paying prisoners as little as 16 cents an hour to make it.

I don’t have any problem with prisoners making hand sanitizer instead of license plates.

Yes they could. Corn based ethanol. The problem was it wasn’t just felons drinking it in jail, but it went mainstream with teenagers around 2010 and mixing it with mouthwash (more ethanol) and using salt the break the alcohol from the gel. To make it less desirable, they switched to isopropyl ethanol which is prone to giving horrid hangovers.

From NIH:

“Isopropanol, or isopropyl alcohol, is a clear, colorless liquid that emits an odor that resembles acetone. It is a commercially available product mainly is found as a 70% solution in rubbing alcohol and hand sanitizers. Unlike the other toxic alcohols, isopropanol rarely causes death and is associated with ketosis without acidosis. Treatment of isopropanol ingestions are typically supportive therapy and ingestions are rarely lethal.”

Just wait until they find one of the prisoners took a healthy piss in it, like license plate paint in Michigan.

I agree. Lets pay them $15 dollars an hour for their work.

Then let charge them $50 dollars and hour for their upkeep and subtract if from their pay.

It’s wood alcohol. If they drink it they’ll go blind.

Hi.

There are pros and cons here. (Sorry)

Ninety one percent isopropyl alcohol and aloe Vera solution (2/3) is supposed to be sufficient. Plus, nobody wants to drink it.

Put the cons to work and pay them the going wage.

“It’s wood alcohol. If they drink it they’ll go blind.”

It can’t be. Wood alcohol can go directly from your skin to your blood stream.
The state website says isopropyl alcohol.

I assume all they are doing is taking commercially produced products, combining and packaging them.

This is the kind of work done in factories by automated equipment with minimal labor costs, right?
