Even still, high early-season vaccination rates and a relatively effective annual vaccine appeared to help suppress illnesses. In total, the CDC estimates that up to 42.9 million people got sick during the 2018-2019 flu season, 647,000 people were hospitalized and 61,200 died. That’s fairly on par with a typical season, and well below the CDC’s 2017-2018 estimates of 48.8 million illnesses, 959,000 hospitalizations and 79,400 deaths.
........................
So if you do the math the normal flu-virus we get here in the US yields about a 2% death rate. 1.65% by my math for the most recent period.
I think we will find that the corona virus is about half that as far as the death rate goes.Current stats will probably support that.
So why is everyone so exercised that we are in the midst of collapsing the economy!!
Since this is a political forum much of the time let's delve into the possible political aspects of covid 19 and it's ramifications.
We just went through several years of “get Trump any way possible” by the dems and the drivebys. They will do anything to get rid of Trump, slow him down or make him look bad.
The false impeachment of our President was a perfect example. Why not make up stuff get a fisa warrant on basically nothing but lies and then use that as a basis to impeach the president.?
They did. He was impeached and it was a miserable failure. His numbers only went higher.
The dems have learned that impeachment was a horrible mistake. Now they need to get it out of the news cycle.Problem is it has to be replaced by something.Something as powerful or even more so if possible. They never give up. Anything that can possibly be used against our President to keep him from winning even if it means collapsing the world economy and scaring the population to death will work for their needs.
How about Covid 19? Would that work? My guess is they think it will. Are they all out using it against Trump? Not so far that we can tell. But is that on the way? You betcha.

So do we fall right into their hands by promoting the dire consequences of covid 19.Especially, when we have first hand evidence that it's likely not as deadly as the common flu!!? Most likely.
The more we push the driveby,DNC,stop everyone from coming in mantra, stop this get together, the better it is for the dems worse for us. Shortages in this and that, eliminating anything that might create more potential to catch a virus that is not as deadly as the common flu but hyped up to scare the crap out of everything is what they want.
The more we do this are we basically carrying the driveby/dnc line for them? Are we doing their job of collapsing the Trump economy which he basically is running on as his key accomplishment.?Looks like it.
Also do they have him in a hold position boxed in. a position where if he says what “we can and should say” that “its all bullsh_t” and we should just go about our business like we do in normal flu seasons everything will work out? If he dares say that the drivebys will come down on/crucify him like a ton of bricks. But, if we say it we can kill them off,is that the case,I think it is.
Also i think its what we should be doing.

Even if another American never sniffles from this, the supply chain crash is pretty much baked into the cake at this point.

Do you or anyone you know take meds? China hasn’t shipped those for nearly 2 months now.

What about parts for your car like brake pads or windshield wipers?

Ditto.

China is a single point of failure for the economy of nearly every developed nation.

That includes us too btw.

In the end it does not matter what we say about the virus.

It will do what it will do.

That said, please check out the videos on this site—lots of detail, lots of facts, lots of data, lots of evidence:

ever wonder why our flu/pneumonia season goes from 1.8/1000 in Nov to 1.9 in December to 48.1 in Jan to now 57.9/1000 for Feb? Could it be travelers? It’s a mistake to look at the USA as being in a vacuum.

“the CDC has estimated (based on weekly influenza surveillance data) that at least 12,000 people have died from influenza between Oct. 1, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020, and the number of deaths may be as high as 30,000.”

cdc website:
“Key indicators that track flu activity remain high but decreased for the third week in a row. Severity indicators (hospitalizations and deaths) remain moderate to low overall, but hospitalization rates differ by age group, with high rates among children and young adults.”

The overall cumulative hospitalization rate for the season increased to 57.9/1000

The percentage of deaths attributed to pneumonia and influenza increased to 6.9%

11 influenza-related pediatric deaths were reported this week for a total of 136 pediatric deaths

Is this common core math? 79400 death / 48.8 million cases is 0.1654% CFR you are off by an order of magnitude. The WHO has COVID19 at 3.4% , the CDC says 2% the two viruses are not even in the same family of virus, and the COVID19 strain is novel humans have no immunity developed yet to it and artificial immunity is years away if ever with a vaccine. This bug is brother’s with MERS and SARS both are nearly identical coronavirus strains and those bugs have 9 to 30% CFR it would be a blessing to have this one only be 2% but it is in no way shape form or function flu it is completely disingenuous to compare the two. Comparing a novel strain that has under 8 weeks as a global spread to an.entire years worth of influenza cases is also completely disingenuous. This bug has an replication number or R0 of 2 to 6 with individual cases in the hundreds. Example the woman who infected the church in Korea or in the 20s for the lawyer in New York whose R0 for that cluster is 20 and still climbing. This bug is at least twice as contagious as flu if not six to 20 times as much, this is largely due to it being novel and everyone exposed has never been exposed before their body must mount a completely virgin defence.

Hard to do the politics of covid without more info.
We can expect media ‘panic’ during March as the reported cases, and deaths, rise hugely.

I don’t ‘supply chain’ problems will be a big deal. OTOH ‘demand’ problems will be evident in economic numbers.

Lots of reasons for the US to do much better than others, looking like this will just be a VERY BAD flu season.

Over-emphasizing the danger now just makes Trump look better later.

But we don’t understand the disease well enough to extrapolate to politics. Keep an eye on the disease’s progress in other countries and learn more for now.
