School closures in Puget Sound region

Friday will see a handful of school closures related to the coronavirus.

The University of Washington has announced that starting Monday, March 9, all classes and exams will be conducted remotely until the end of the quarter on March 20.

Mariner High School is closed Friday after a family member of a student was diagnosed with coronavirus. The student is not showing any symptoms themselves, but will be quarantined at home and monitored for the next two weeks. The school’s custodial team will spend Friday and the weekend deep cleaning and disinfecting buildings.

All Northshore School District schools remain closed, and could stay that way for the next couple weeks, after a Woodmoor Elementary School parent volunteer tested presumptive positive for the virus. The district said it’ll monitor the situation and health department recommendations. Parents can expect plans to transition instruction to remote learning starting Monday. The closure affects 33 schools and over 23,000 students. Staff members trained Tuesday for remote learning.

After closing Thursday, Monroe School District schools have reopened Friday, after a pair of students at Fryelands Elementary tested negative for coronavirus.

Hazen High School remains closed, opting to shut down for the remainder of the week to investigate if anybody came into contact with an ill student. All other Renton schools remain open on regular schedules.

Eastside Preparatory in Kirkland has decided it doesn’t want to take any risks, shutting its doors through the rest of March and having its students attend class remotely.

Seattle Public Schools announced Thursday that it will keep schools open, “per Public Health recommendations.”

Thanks for this article.

From the article:

“Seattle Public Schools @SeaPubSchools

Per Public Health recommendations, we are keeping schools open at this time. The longer we can keep stay open, the better for our students and the entire community. We hear and share your concerns and will continue to update you daily.”

Let’s hope it works out, but concerns it will not go the way they expect it to.
