As I understand it, it’s more closely related to the cold virus(es). It’s just a new, additional, very, very, very bad cold.
When most people think about the common cold virus, they think rhinoviruses, but there are also several coronaviruses and other viruses associated with seasonal “common colds”. Really, the common cold is just a set of symptoms with several causes.
