People claim that they invented nothing, or zer0 or the null set or something like that.

Hindus invented the zero. Arabs borrowed it from them. I think Hindus invented drinking their own urine too.
Actually the concept of a zero numerical character is Hindu in origin, Arabs copied it and the entire number character system - 0 through 9. Fibonacci (Italian mathematician & merchant) adopted it to give himself an advantage in business efficiency over the other European merchants. He later published on this, the abacus, invented double entry book keeping, etc. Perhaps simultaneously the father of number theory & modern accounting.
