Canada has some trappings of royalty but for the most part the royalty remains in Britain and other than the occasional visit doesn’t have to do much in service of it all. Now that the pair has decided on an extended stay there is a cost. But since they are losing their designated royal status there is no reason for Canada to keep paying. I would assume they are now going to be like distant relatives of the Queen without that designation. Those who fall into that category don’t get any special security or what not.
If they really wanted the trappings they could lobby to become Governor General. They get a nice estate in Ottawa and security but along with that come some royal duties like opening Parliament and signing bills etc.
