Coronavirus concerns as cargo flights from China to Huntsville begin

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WAFF) - An air cargo carrier begins flights to Huntsville from China this week. A lot of people have reached out to city leaders with concerns about the flights.

WAFF talked with city leaders, airport officials, and health experts and they say as of now, there’s nothing to worry about.

The CDC has strict guidelines for every cargo company flying to and from China.

The last thing anyone wants to worry about when they’re boarding a plane, taking a trip or going on vacation is getting sick.

Employees with the Alabama Department of Public Health say with DSV making flights from China to Huntsville, you don’t have to worry.

“We are aware certainly that airlines have been coming into the United States from China as well as other parts of the world and coming into various places and also aware that cargo planes have continued to come into the United States from China,” said Karen Landers.

Employees with U.S. Customs say it’s not a direct flight. Planes go from China and stop in Alaska, where they go through customs before making the next leg of the trip. For DSV, that will include Huntsville.

“We do not have any indication at this time that the corona virus is transmitted through any product or any mail or any other entity of that nature this virus is airborne but again the contact is the person who is infected with a virus you have to be in very close proximity say 6 to 8 feet from the person that actually has the coronavirus,” said Landers.

Alabama Public Health Officers are keeping in touch with the CDC about coronavirus. If policies are changed they’ll be the first to know.

I don’t think cargo is a risk.
But ‘luggage’... I’m suspicious of that. It comes as quick as passengers.

Just hand to order a part from China this afternoon. Ticks me off, as this part could probably be made in US. It's a good quality item, and I would not mind paying more it if I could get in US.

Wish I did to have to order at all, but I don't have a CANX "bird" I can take parts off of.

In response to your post about the cargo place being used to pick up the slack

“ HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WBRC) - A global transportation company has announced plans to deliver cargo to the US by opening a direct line of flight between Shanghai, China and Huntsville, Alabama.
Beginning February 25, DSV Global Transport and Logistics will operate a Boeing 747-8 freighter airplane three times per week, between Huntsville and Shanghai.
According to DSV, multiple airlines have either suspended or reduced the number of flights to and from Mainland China due to the risk of spreading of the coronavirus. As a consequence, there is an estimated 5,000 tons less capacity available per day.
DSV calls the air bridge between Alabama and China a “unique solution” to the impact the coronavirus has had on the delivery of international cargo.”

Just made my night a little heavier on prayer. Our oldest daughter, son-in-law and 3 grandkids are in Huntsville. Daughter is as prepped as any of us but her hubby has to work and the 2 older g-kids are in college, both with typical college kid jobs interacting with public. This granny-hen is feeling a strong need to bring those chickens back out in the desserted Texas boonies!

Guessing cargo planes fly themselves so there is no worries there are any sick crew on board. Guess all the crates and contents of the crates were never touched by sick human hands. What the heck was the point of only stopping passenger planes?
