People should be aware of 'cytokine Storm', which can occur with flu's and viruses.

The 1918 flu or the Spanish Flu infected 500,000,000 people (500 million) and 50 million people died.

It is conjectured (but not confirmed) that 'cytokine storm' might have played a factor in this flu/virus in 1918.

Basically, 'cytokine storm' is when the body's immune system attacks the body by 'over reacting' to an infection.

If I start getting sick, I might take aspirin and benadryl to suppress part of the immune system.

The 'cytokine storm' is because the immune system is 'too powerful'.

Of course, an anti-viral would be good as well.

The 'cytokine storm' may be happening now with our existing flu outbreak. There have been over 100 children reported dying from the flu.

Where I live, a 10th grader came down with a respiratory illness, and then died later the same day.

I believe the 'child' was very healthy, and may have had the 'cytokine storm'.

It is possible that China is having this trouble with the new Corona virus outbreak that started in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China

I can’t imagine the starvation and degraded living conditions in Wuhan
And just how easy it would be to have the same problem here

4. Everyone is welcome to post, but don’t bore us with your “you are panicking” posts. They are tedious.

But it's ok to post drivelous speculation, like 10% mortality with 100% infection rate, Chinese incinerating 1000's of extra victims, etc, etc.

Instapundit update - Morning 2/24 - https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/359319/

CORONAVIRUS UPDATE: Coronavirus outbreak nearing pandemic ‘tipping point’ as infections soar, say experts.

Coronavirus Live Updates: Outbreaks Around the World Raise Fears of Pandemic.

Trump’s fury over coronavirus patients being repatriated may be justified. “The way the evacuation was conducted seems to point more to a rushed addressing of the discontent of the passengers (who had been kept in very uncomfortable conditions on the ship) than due diligence.”

Coronavirus deaths near 2,600 in China.

Large parts of China ease coronavirus curbs, many report no new cases.

Stock markets slump as coronavirus spreads in Europe – business live.

World economy shudders as Coronavirus threatens global supply chains.

Dow futures drop nearly 700 points as coronavirus spread stirs fears of global economic impact.

UPDATE: A Hong Kong friend emails:

Hoping not to jinx it, but pretty good news.

Only two cases in Hong Kong in the past week or so.
(Since the 14th, one case on the 18th and one on the 20th).

That comes down to:
1 – Hong Kong shut the border with China
2 – People know the protocol after dealing with SARS 17 years ago.
3 – People wear masks, etc. out of courtesy to others as much as for themselves – so 99% are wearing masks within 4-6 feet of other people.
4 – Doctors being hyper-vigilant. As there are still many “unknowns”, confirmed and sick patients will not only have to be cleared of their symptoms and signs (such as X-ray and various tests) but also (most important) at least TWO molecular tests free of the virus in their respiratory system before they can be released (although they are not sick).

People doing lots of hiking in the great outdoors with good weather of late while shopping malls remain empty.

Data updates here and here.

Fingers crossed. I’d like nothing better than to see this fizzle.

My concern is that of those who get “better”, some folks will become “chronic” in their ability to transmit the disease in the same way a hep b or hep c carrier can continue to carry the disease and transmit it under favorable conditions, like the young teen girl who had no symptoms but still carried the virus and getting people sick. This may be a virus that everyone will contract at some point but even if you survive it, you never get rid of it.

This might be the grossest thing you'll read today, but just might answer the question of how these "super spreaders" who appear asymptomatic are infecting 100+ people at a pop.

Highlight of this article:

"airborne plume of virus-laden diarrheic gases can spread very far, and it can linger."

The 2019-nCoV Coronavirus: Are there two routes to infection?

I am not exactly sure but it sounds a lot like they are saying somebody can also pass this through passing GAS if they've got this nasty bacteria in their gut...

Smoking kills six million people a year, accounting for one in 10 deaths among adults worldwide. Without urgent action, tobacco use will claim one billion lives this century!

This is not an attempt to say don’t worry about this virus, smoking kills way more, no, the story is if you smoke you’re probably in for a fight for your very life if you get Coronavirus.

China has the most tobacco users (300.8 million), followed by India (274.9 million). China has the most smokers (300.7 million), while India has the most smokeless tobacco users (205.9 million).

Russia has the highest smoking rate among men (60.2 percent). Particularly alarming is the fact that the percentage of Russian youth who smoke (both male and female, ages 15 to 19) is higher than in any other country.
