Los Angeles Times film critic Justin Chang said Friday on CNN that President Donald Trump mentioning the movie Gone With the Wind at his rally was a racist dog whistle.
Chang said, Its kind of unfortunate, I think, that we have a president whose entire presidency is founded on xenophobia and of course his comments are not surprising coming from someone who likes to dehumanize people of other cultures and people of color. So none of thats surprising.
He continued, Well, that whole thing, Gone with the Wind and Sunset Boulevard, that all smacks of a dog whistle hearkening back to an earlier era of Hollywood greatness. Look, we can love Gone with the Wind, and also acknowledge its the romantic view of the old South, which many people find problematic. That is another racist dog whistle as well.
He added, I think its real laziness on his part. He is just someone who is very lazy. I think to say that. You know, a lot of people say this, there are no movies being made in the present today that are as good as the classics that were made 50 or 60 years ago. And its totally fine that Trump is, you know, out of touch with popular culture. You know, he has or should have better things to do like running the country, but he really should think twice about speaking about things of which he is so woefully ignorant.

Spot on!
Its mine too! Read the book in hs and loved the movie. The casting was spot on.
If he liked Das Boot, they would say he is a Nazi. If he liked the Darkest Hour, they would say he hates Germans.
Its a movie. You either line it or you dont. GWTW is one of my favorites and Scarlet OHara is one of the all-time great characters, in film and in literature. Now it does depict Slavery as a mostly benevolent institution and most of the slaves, except Mammy, as being little more than children in need of supervision and direction. But hey, it was 1939.
He said he liked Sunset Boulevard too.
No one has ever described President Trump as lazy. Shows how out of touch Chang is.
Leftists hate you and I, folks. Just President Trump is a lightening rod for their hate and vitriol.
Buy weapons and ammo, folks. The more the better. These leftists will use government to hurt you and if they gain enough power, they will use government to murder you.
There have been entirely to many examples of this reality throughout history to not understand that this is what leftists what to do to us as well.
JoMa
Warner Oland or the other guy? And Keye Luke as Number 1 son.
>> Sunset Boulevard, that all smacks of a dog whistle hearkening back to an earlier era of Hollywood greatness.
wtf is racist about Sunset Boulevard???
short takeaway, most people have not and will not (in 50 years time) see Parasite
If he walked on water, they would say he cant swim!
>> And its totally fine that Trump is, you know, out of touch with popular culture.
awards like this reflect greatness, not popularity (as in pop culture). Star Wars was never up for best picture.
and what kind of writer includes “you know” in his ramble?
>>Only in LA can you be a racist film critic and know absolutely nothing about film.
Chicago too
dopey Roeper doesn’t even like b&w movies

It’s not the movie, it’s the era. According to this critic, Hollywood was racist back in the 40s and 50s. Therefore, if you say the movies of that era are better than today, it’s racist.
Of course the problem here is the left can’t look beyond skin color. They are assuming the problem you have with today’s movies is there are more diversity in the casts.
Adjusted for inflation, GWTW is the biggest box office movie of all time. But according to this Asian racist at the Times you are the racist if you dare mention it.
Did he say he liked GWTW, or did he just ask where American-made classics like GWTW are being made nowadays? Most of those yelling “racist” worship Hollywood and probably liked GWTW until the minute before he brought it up.
It’s not a favorite of mine, but one would have to be deliberately obtuse not to recognize its status amongst movies in general.
“and what kind of writer includes you know in his ramble?”
A dimwitted know it all racist Millennial Writer to be exact.
I liked this movie quote - from “Soylent Green”, I think:
“As God is my witness, I will never go hungry again.”
Star Wars was nominated for Best Picture, Director, Supporting Actor and Original Screenplay and won for Editing, Score, Costume, Production, Visual Effects, Sound and a Special Achievement Oscar.
So mainly technical awards, but Star Wars changed the movie industry forever...for better or worse.
A classic post...hysterical.
