Pit to hiss in is a stolen line from a remembered childhood joke. I guess 45’s snake poem roams around in the back of my mind always. He reads it so well.
MRS. POTTS PIT Joke
Joey was a young snake, not very big.
Joey lived in a pit with his mother.
One day Joey was hissing in the pit, when his mother said, Joey, dont hiss in the pit. If you must hiss, go outside the pit to hiss.
So Joey went outside the pit to hiss, and was hissing all around until he finally leaned over and hissed in the pit. His mother heard Joey hissing in the pit and said Joey, if you must hiss in a pit, go over to Mrs. Potts pit and hiss in her pit!
Joey went over to Mrs. Potts pit to hiss in her pit, but Mrs. Pott wasnt home, so he hissed in her pit anyway.
While Joey was hissing in Mrs. Potts pit, Mrs. Pott came home and found Joey hissing in her pit. She said, Joey, if you must hiss in a pit, dont hiss in my pit; go home and hiss in your own pit!
This made Joey very sad and he cried all the way home. When Joey got home his mother saw him crying and asked, Joey, whats the matter?
Joey said, I went over to Mrs. Potts to hiss in her pit, but Mrs. Pott wasnt home so I hissed in her pit anyway. Mrs. Pott came home and found me hissing in her pit and said Joey, if you must hiss in a pit, go to your own pit and hiss. Dont hiss in my pit!
This made Joeys mother very angry and she cried,
Why that mean old lady! I knew Mrs. Pott when she didnt have a pit to hiss in!
