He disdains everyone, including his possible voters - he seems to disdain the stupidity of all of mankind and as a consolation to himself has decided he can at least impress and therefore lead them (or be followed -> which are two different things.)]

Pete is a glib, bull-shitting dim bulb whose signature accomplishment is being a Rhodes scholar. Completely downhill from there. Even Bill Clinton had the political chops to become governor of Arkansas.
