In China, accidents in coal fields have set the coal seams on fire (and unminable). They are terrible with health and safety and environmental safeguards.
The amount of CO2 from burning coal seams (almost impossible to put out) equals the USA CO2 output from trucks and cars each year.
The problem with the carbon hysteria and all the Chicken Little’s running around with their hair on fire is they should have learned in 4th grade science class that CO2 is heavier than air. It sinks. Therefore, CO2 cannot be a greenhouse gas no matter what the models say. The tiny fraction of warming we’ve seen in the last 30 years corresponds directly to diminishing output of the sun. As the sun’s output slows, likely the beginning of a Grand Solar Minimum, the oceans have been releasing heat stored up over the last 200 years or so. The oceans have 1000x the heat holding capacity of the atmosphere. As this heat is released it takes water vapor with it. The effect of increasing available water vapor on global temperature can be plainly seen in specific humidity, aka saturation mixing ratios. The slight warming that has been experienced shows up predominantly in the arid arctic regions and in overnight low temperatures because that is where the increased specific humidity has the most effect.
