Here in Maryland, which the old-timers pronounce Merlyn, there are several pronunciations of the town Havre de Grace (Harbor of Grace). Early inhabitants of this pre-Revolution town affected the original French pronunciation, but it deteriorated to a nasal American version, Have d'grass. Old timers who hung around the horseraces that were very popular in the area from the 19th and early 20th centuries pronounced it HARV d'graw. Today, media announcers go with HAVer dee grayce.
