I wonder if there was some kind of failure and the pilot turned the helicopter to make for some area and thought he could autorotate in, but...in a hilly area...

I took a helicopter flying course once, and part of it was doing an autorotation. Up until that point, I had never seen an autorotation procedure before, and thought that you simply let the aircraft flutter slowly to the ground...kind of like a seed pod from a maple tree that slowly descends, rotating as it does so.

When we did it in the helicopter, the instructor explained what he was going to do and how it worked, then he nosed the thing over and dove at the ground! Boy, that ground came up fast, and he pulled the chopper up above the ground slowing it...I don’t even remember if he set it down, but I’ll say, I had no idea an autorotation worked like that! Even though the concept was explained in the ground school portion, it was quite different to be sitting in the front of that thing as the guy dove towards the ground!

I’ve watched video of autorotations since then, and some seemed mild in comparison. I wonder if the pilot was taking a dramatic approach to make an impression. When he did it, it was like being at the top of a roller coaster as he nosed it over! Felt like it, too...

You are correct he flew RIGHT INTO the side of the hill at over 100 miles an hour and it far lower than 30ft from clearing the top of the hill!! This pilot had no business flying in these conditions he was probably getting pressure that they HAD TO get there on time!!

Yes, but had he cleared the hill, he would have been out of the clouds, and would have reoriented himself.

...

The top of the hill and the area above the hill was in the clouds.

The descent rate for the helicopter was over 2,000 feet a minute

that’s about 23 miles per hour. I know that’s descent, not ground speed, but as I’m not being a helicopter pilot, is that considered a very fast descent?

A second too late is all it takes.

To be honest here, so some guy that played basketball is mourned widely. I simply don’t get it. Yes, all untimely passing’s, and timely passing’s, are all to be mourned. However, I’ve know good and great men in my life but they never were recognized and mourned. For example: Colonel Phil “Hands” Handley, http://www.nickelonthegrass.net/Author.htm, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BPLZazga4RM&feature=youtu.be

A true patriot and American. . .no media memorial reporting.

Great words to live by. . .as my first flight instructor used to say; “You can match the low-fly record but can never beat it”

“There’s a good chance they didn’t suffer at all.”

They hit at `184 mph. Never felt anything. Probably not even aware there was a problem.

Scud running.....

In general aviation, scud running is a practice in which pilots lower their altitude to avoid clouds or instrument meteorological conditions (IMC). The goal of scud running is to stay clear of weather to continue flying with visual, rather than instrument, references. This practice is widely accepted to be dangerous, and has led to death in many cases from pilots flying into terrain or obstacles, such as masts and towers, normally referred to as CFIT; however, even instrument-rated pilots sometimes elect to take the risk to avoid icing or embedded thunderstorms in cloud, or in situations where the minimum instrument altitudes are too high for their aircraft.

As I understand it, Kobie did not actually own the Helicopter.

It was owned by a company called Island Express.

Sounds like he was VFR, then flew into IFR/IMC, and was descending to try to get back into VFR so he could follow the highway, but the fog was so low, he did not see the hill until it was too late.

Of course I am speculating like everyone else.
