In Jan of 1986, the FBI was discussing Banco Ambrosiano, Italy's largest bank. The recent documented added to the FBI vault (link below) feeatures, among other documents, the Director of the FBI's statement that the Italian Police investigation of the bank failure was an "instant matter" as it involves several FBI subjects including Michele Sidona and [name redacted by FBI] in a most complex case involving foreign intrigue, murder and the highest echelons of the Vatican
The case broke wide open in 1983 when the then president of Banco Ambrosiano, Roberto Calvi, was found hanging by the neck beneath Black Friars Bridge in London.
The linked document goes on to say two witnesses relevent to the case were, at that time, residing in Washington, D.C. (Pg. 5 of linked document, both worked at banks)

Page 10 of the document refers to company AIRTEL and it's possible relation to international money laundering. July 12, 1982, Rome withdrew it's request for the FBI to investigate citing [redacted by FBI] as the reason.
Page 18 of the document indicates that, contrary to info above, receipt of teletype indicating Calvi's body was found in the Thames river on Friday June 18, 1982 after he "disappeard" on June 11th. Cause of death was unknown but believed to be suicide or Murder.
June 17th, Calvi's personal/private secretary died after she "fell out of a window"; the speculation around her death centered on suicide.
