Can’t find N95 masks? Order/buy N100 or P100 masks/filters. The N95 masks filters out 95% of matter. the N/P100 masks filter out 99.97% of matter according to the CDC. The 3M 6000 series masks accept a pair of P100 filters.

Yesterday I ordered 5 pairs of P100 filters (part number 2091, pink in color) for a series 6000 respirator mask I already owned as part of my PPE for a previous job. The lot of 5 pairs went for about $11 shipped. I just checked the listing and unfortunately it looks like the particular seller sold out in the last 24hrs, but similar ones should still be available from Amazon and other ebay sellers.

These masks/filters are used when working with asbestos, welding, silica, drywall finishing, moldy basements, cleaning up fire damage, etc. So they do have practical uses if the pandemic is cancelled.

The 3M respirator masks come in different sizes, and you are supposed to be fit tested so that they have a perfect seal on your face. Also you can’t wear them properly with excessive facial hair. But, in an emergency, I guess a poorly fitting mask is better than none.

3M also has one that covers your entire face (including eyes), but I’m more familiar with the half face piece style as that is what I own and have used in the past.

Avoiding crowds and big stores. Wiping everything down with wipes, lysol, bleach and using soap/water. We do this every year between Oct and March when our naturally produced D3 is low.

I realized just now one reason the death data might be skewed to the older people. Not that they don’t die from stuff like this anyways. They might not get the same level of healthcare for this kind of thing if they’re over 50. Betcha China does the ‘whole lives’ thing that Rahm Emmanuel’s brother advocated. They get 2 aspirin and go home to die/etc.

Interesting question. My wife and sister-in-law are on the potential front lines. Yes we are prepared and making further preparations. I keep warning people about N95 masks. Particle size is important. Coronavirus is 120 nm.

N95 is to prevent you from spreading the virus and touching your face. Keyboard experts here jumped on me when I pointed out N99 or greater. You should have seen the revulsion at the mention of eye protection.

We will be exposed. We have developed plans and methods to decontaminate PPE, launder clothes and sterilize the vehicles. Best practice with PPE too. Putting it on and most importantly taking it off.

We have get home PPE bags and full protection N100 facial respirators, Tyvek, gloves and booties. Knowing particle size and exposure, does this seem like "panic" or preventive?

My wife and sister-in-law will have to go to work. No question. Myself, I can work from the keyboard. Travel for our charitable medical research project is very uncertain now. This will have the greatest impact.

Will we alter our behavior behind common sense preparations, I don't know. Depends on spread, competence of our "elected" health experts, honesty and time window. If it is in the wild locally, 14 days minimum is now the prudent period to alter behavior. If it is in an airport hub, big problem. If it spreads to a country we are working with, we will alter our IRBs.

As far as supermarkets, be a prudent prepper. You don't want to be their for an extended period. We won't be shopping.

The subject of preparing for a disaster is a Britannica size discussion. When a disaster hits, it is not time to prepare.

I don’t know about that. Maybe it has changed in the last 5 years or so, but, EVERY Chinese person I’ve known greatly venerates their elders, and I’m not just talking about their family elderly. My Mom (through her mid-70’s) used to lead a Bible Study / Conversational English Class for Chines students @ a local University, the idea being to bring converts to Christ, and help strengthen the Christian beliefs of those already Christian. (Believe me, in that type town, such beliefs of kids far from home can need plenty reinforcing!) Sometimes Mom would hold the classes at home, esp. when extra tutoring for students requesting such was involved. Plus Mom would have social functions like a Christmas cookie baking party. As she got older, my wife and I would help out with the parties, and I had further contact through church, the occasional emergency, and such. Those kids, including many not yet Christian, had such adoration and respect and love for my Mom... It was just incredible. 10-20 years later, my Mom still gets Easter and Christmas cards from some of her once students. Plus over the years I’ve had a lot of Chinese business contacts and such — any “small talk” of family involving parents or grandparents led to much the same impression.

So, maybe the typical 55 - 80 y/o “leadership” type doesn’t have much regard for their generational peer subjects, but I have a REALLY hard time believing much of the Chinese populace, and the doctors, would stand for casting their elders into the ditch. Even in a dictatorship.
