Having a tower wouldn't have made it any better, downwind departures are for emergency extracts, not standard takeoffs. Didn't see the winds, but having been to Corona for an emergency landing, there isn't much room, and that was after hours in a helo. Overconfidence or under-knowledgeable? In any case a fatal pork-ex.
