IMHO they should lose their security clearances the minute their employment or position as an elected official ends.
My husbands best friend is retired SS and other things like Homeland etc. Like military they sign on to be recalled to duty at a moments notice if needed. This is the biggest reason security clearances remain in place.
That sounds reasonable.
But that reason wouldn't apply to most politicians.
