My sis learned to plant peas from the Amish.
Scatter seeds on the grown no row. Cover with dirt that contains manure. The manure produces heat. The seeds spout. Peas, garlic and winter kale usually can make it through all but the coldest winter. I also have an old sliding door that makes a cold frame and keeps the ground warm.
