As I've stated before, I really don't see what the R Senators who want a trial are getting out of this. Are they looking for some reason to vote to impeach? Will they vote to impeach knowing that they will not have 2/3 to remove, but believe a yes vote will help them hold on to their seat? Surely they don't want to hurt Bernie & help Biden by keeping Bernie off the campaign trail for a month or two.
I'm sure Collins & Romney aren't doing it to see Hunter Biden as a witness. If that is the case, they could hold a committee investigation & call him in.
Unless they plan to, or want to, vote for removal, I don't see any reason to hold a trial.
Brian Kilmeade was trying to explain this morning that the few pubbies Senators up for reelection like Cory Gardner, Susan Collins and a few more who are in dim districts will have a hard time hanging on if the Senate appears unfair.
Nasty is banking on this.
All partisan games.
What I worry about is that the Senators haven’t been paying attention to how this travesty has been carried out and they treat it as if it was a fair impeachment by the House.
A Senator earlier said they have been doing Senate business and were not paying attention.
In other words we know much more than they do.
The Senate refused to convict Swayne, however, because many senators did not believe his offenses amounted to “high crimes and misdemeanors.” During this long trial, it was suggested that a Senate committee, rather than the Senate as a whole, should hear impeachment evidence, and Senator George F. Hoar of Massachusetts proposed that the presiding officer appoint such a committee. While Hoar’s proposal would eventually be embodied in Rule XI of the Senate’s impeachment rules, in 1905 the resolution was referred to the Rules Committee, which took no action.

All this talk that the campaigning senators will have to attend an impeachment trial is not true, according to the Senate rules, posted by the Senate itself.
