SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) The San Francisco 49ers have gone from the No. 2 draft pick to the No. 1 seed in the span of a year.
After four straight losing seasons, including only 10 wins in coach Kyle Shanahan's first two seasons, the 49ers (13-3) emerged as the top team in the NFC thanks a big-play offense and a vastly improved defense.
"We knew going into the year we had a chance to be pretty good with what we had on paper and watching the guys throughout training camp," Shanahan said. "We knew that pretty well after the first five games, we could feel it. Then you go through a number of injuries and stuff and you never know how you're going to be able to fully handle that. That's what I have been impressed the most with the guys, no one has wavered."
That was especially true Sunday night in the season finale when the 49ers ended an eight-game skid in Seattle and beat the Seahawks 26-21 after making a stop inches from the goal line in the closing seconds. That was the fifth straight game for San Francisco that was decided in the final 10 seconds.

This could be Brady’s last game.
It will be interesting to see how aggressive New England is in trying to get a QB in the draft.
Or Belechek goes to the NY Giants because NE won't let him fire Brady.
Unfortunately, Brady kept winning Super Bowls for them.
I started following the Niners again once they jettisoned their kneelers. Now, they’re back to concentrating on winning games on the field instead of playing games off it.
Two critical plays kept this team from being 15-1. With the homefield advantage, they should be able to steamroll into the Super Bowl.
I'm sure they miss jock itch more.
“Two critical plays kept this team from being 15-1”
Both the Baltimore and Seattle losses were haunting.
The Seattle loss has been avenged. It was made more sweet because Seattle had an opportunity to win, and did not flub it...but were stopped.
So we’re watching football now. Did that flag kneeling thing get fixed then?
I ain’t gonna be the only one boycotting anything!
Right - and often he swings to the inside going in and either burns or gets burned. I want him to the the burner not the burnee.
We’ve got enough burnees with Sanders...
:)
Seattle flubbed it with that delay of game penalty.
Beast Mode(AKA Big Baby) was all set to smash it in from inside the one yard line with just seconds left in game.
After the penalty, out he goes...and then incomplete pass.
Seattle had it won. Before the penalty, Kudos to the Niner who stopped cold the Seattle receiver from getting into the endzone.
I marvel at how good of an athlete Bosa is.
No. Brady was worth 1 more SB. Garappilo has yet to win 1.
The Carolina Panthers owner David Tepper, a real Lib, gave ex-49ers kneeler and big Kaeperdick lover Eric Reid a big contract. Worked out real well, didn’t it Tepper. Hope you and your sorry-ass team suck for years to come.
Love my Packers, I'm just being a realist.
Wouldn't it be great to see Garoppolo go up against Brady in the Superbowl?
Just my own .02.
Yep, but he doesn’t have TE hands and may not have caught the rocket.
And while few are blaming him (TE), I’m sure has has a very sore shoulder and ringing in his ears.
What a hit.
As far as I can tell the kneeling crap has stopped, without announcement or fanfare.
Hmmmmm. Ping me if they both make it to the SB. I'll wager on that one.
Big, very strong and very fast.
Another year of experience without serious injury and he’ll be unstoppable.
“Wouldn’t it be great to see Garoppolo go up against Brady in the Superbowl?”
I would rather avenge the Ravens loss.
Well, don’t follow me on one or two predictions but the whole enchilada over a few years. Overall for the last forty years I’ve scored around 60% for playoff predictions.
My predictions are kinda like picking stocks - don’t just pick one stock but pick the index.
I’ll be very pleasantly surprised if the Niners make it to the SB. The two played each other in a recent SB which SF should have won with first and goal to win but Jim Harbaugh instead of calling for the run, passed every down except for the first down and failed. What a disaster.
