First to mind is from I Love Lucy:
“Vitametavegemin”

Second, from childhood would be: Kaopectate
Although mother never gave it to us with peanut butter, it was frequently given to cure stomach ails.

Blackstrap Molasses?

My dad said they used to give that as medicine and he wouldn’t drink tea because he said it reminded him of it.

One day he got a letter from the doctor telling him he was a little anemic.
He asked me to look up in a natural healing book what it said about it.

I looked it up, and said, “It says here you’re going to die. The number one thing it recommended was blackstrap molasses.”

Nutella is a good guess, but it first came out in the mid-1960s.

Metrical was a diet supplement; it was a canned dairy drink that came in a number of flavors. It was meant to replace a meal.

Never heard of it. My mom’s idea of health food was milk toast.

It looked a lot like Nutella but was thicker. You had to lick it off the spoon like licking a sucker.

I remember Hadacol, but it wasn’t given to children in my family. However, A boxtop from it got me in to see Gene Autry I think. Maybe Roy Rogers, but I think it was Gene Autry.

I think that you are onto something. Dark brown, thick and sweet. I thought it started with an “M”...

I also remember that horrible chalky taste of white Milk of Magnesia. It was better when they made it pink (peppermint?) but the smell and horrible after taste were punishment for bowel troubles. Difficult to answer if the remedy was worse than the affliction.

It was in a brown jar with a wide lid for scooping it out of the jar. I also remember that it was kept in the refrigerator and tasted good enough to be a bedtime treat.

When I was growing up we got cod liver oil, castor oil or spoonfuls of Vicks, depending on our ailments.
