i guess the other two passengers riding with Patton were just lucky as hell not to get a scratch
That often happens in accidents.

Patton was sitting on the edge of his seat and looking out. Next to him was General Gay. Gay and Woodring, the driver, both braced for the crash. Patton had no time to brace after Gen. Gay said “Hang tight”.
Gay did have some bruises.
I read that eyewitnesses (who included his wife) said he had his head out of the window when the accident occurred.
Actually yes, they probably were lucky. Its a crap shoot some times. Ive seen one person wake up alive and well from an accident where I saw the picture of the car and was certain someone had died in it, but they didnt, and another situation with a minor dent and the driver sustained permanent neurological damage. Heck, I was in an accident about 5 years ago myself where a group of college girls blew through a red light and sheared the front of my car off (literally the entire engine block). If they had been a quarter of a second slower or I had been a quarter of a second faster, the full 60 mph impact would have been on my driver door. Parts of my car all over the road; when the first cop arrived on the scene I was clearing some debris off the intersection to open at least one lane for traffic; cop looks at my car, asks wheres the driver? I point at myself. He shakes his head in disbelief and comes over and shakes my hand.

There was only one other passenger, Hobart Gay.
Patton had been riding shotgun until he noticed a dog in the jeep trailing his car. Patton thought the dog was suffering from the cold. He told his driver to stop and get the dog, which he then put in the passenger seat. Patton moved to the back. The accident occurred shortly after.
