No park in New York City is nice or safe after dark. Because it is right across from the dorms, criminals probably know that the college kids go there after dark. Criminals watch people and places. They stake out sites to see if they can use them to commit their criminal acts. I guess I have a biased opinion on things when it comes to safety and security because I worked in uniform in NY State’s prison system for 25 years. As rookies we were told: Criminals/inmates have 24 hours a day to think of illegal things to do. They’ll scope you out...watch your movements, look for vulnerabilities. Be aware and alert at all times where you are, and who is around you. I’ve been retired for 16 years, and that sense of security has never left me. It’s sad that so many people have no idea how easy it is to become a victim.

Columbia not only has unarmed security people watching the area, it’s got armed cops of its own. Given how compact the area is, it’s a wonder that they have any issues, coverage-wise. Then there’s the fact that NYPD’s 26th precinct headquarters are literally hundreds of yards away. This kind of stuff goes unsaid, but I’d think Columbia is higher priority than any of the nearby public housing projects, in terms of NYPD resources. Then again, maybe De Blasio’s NYC has changed things.
