In 1964, Johnson refused to debate Goldwater because that would have given Goldwater both a platform and legitimacy. Johnson was so far ahead in the polls that he didn't even mention Goldwater's name in his campaign speeches.

In 1968, neither party wanted debates because it would have given Wallace legitimacy and an edge. Both parties feared he would throw the election into the House and set the civil rights movement back a generation.

In 1972, Nixon refused to debate McGovern for the same reasons that Johnson refused to debate Goldwater in 1964.

By ditching the debates in 2020, Trump would be signaling that the Democrat nominee was beneath contempt and not worth appearing on the same stage.

Great job, Publius. Thank you for the history lesson on debate rejections.

POTUS finds the presidential debate ring a rigged car wreck for sick voyeurs, and unhealthy for the country.

This isn’t the 1950’s. They are long Obsolete.

All he has to say is “ my first four years of promises kept and the Economic boom trumps any slogan, witty retort or cheap political shot the Rat has up their sleeve.”

What you say makes a lot of sense; HOWEVER ...

I think the challenge for Trump is to get through to some of the people that only watch MSM or socialist media and hence never actually see extended examples of his personality and thoughts. Some of these low-info types may tune into a Presidential debate, if only by accident.

All he has to do is run on his record, and highlight the insanity of socialism and globalism.

The RAT candidate will come off as Lilliputian and RAT-like compared with our great leader. By comparison, LBJ, Nixon and Humphrey were not great communicators and had vulnerabilities on issues such as Vietnam and even the divisive Civil Rights movement.

considering what President Trump has been thru and also accomplished thru his first term, I actually think this would be a very strategic and good move.
