College Football Playoff updated rankings: Who are the top four teams in the fifth CFP poll of 2019?

The penultimate set of College Football Playoff rankings were revealed on Tuesday. Ohio State, LSU and Clemson and Georgia ranked as the Nos 1-4 teams, respectively, while Utah, Oklahoma and Baylor slotted in the Nos. 5-7 spots. The Bulldogs have the best bet of making the final field with a win over LSU, but Utah and the winner of the Big 12 championship likely need to make a statement that can't be ignored by the selection committee.

MORE: A guide to conference championship weekend The Playoff rankings will be released each Tuesday leading up to conference championship weekend. The final rankings will be unveiled on Dec. 8. The College Football Playoff semifinals will be on Dec. 28 at the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl in Atlanta and PlayStation Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Ariz. The CFP championship game will be Jan. 13 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.

Each year two or perhaps three teams stand well above the rest ... on paper. Then there are four more teams that are not at all far apart but differ on various dimensions (one with better defense, say, and another with few turnovers or better special teams). Add to this that the players are all 19 and 20 years old and you have a mess. The CFP committee resolves this by doing whatever they darn well please, and all of it in smoke filled rooms.

Add to this a $3B contract between ESPN and the best but most “remote” conference, the SEC, so that the conference’s intrinsic advantage is egregiously overhyped. Then take the two conferences that are most slighted, put all of their teams in the largest markets in the country, and have them care about conference championships and internal rivalries (Buckeye fans would sooner beat Michigan than Alabama) and not really give a flying cig about a CFP that they’re never invited to join (rightly or wrongly, does NOT matter).

The list of nonsense goes on much longer.

Who had the idea to introduce this CFP system? It is a slow motion disaster with no way out.

Nick Saban, is that you? Gee, I thought when you beat someone, you were better than them. Some teams peak early in the year and others fade away due to injuries.

Auburn 48
Alabama 45

They used to not put ranked teams ahead of ranked teams who beat them, especially with two losses.

Win tomorrow and they are in Cotton Bowl without their coach. Most likely going to FSU.

“Oregon winning sets of a round of chaos”

It “should” set off a round of fire the committee!

I feel so close to a real final 4 in college football...even though there should be a final 8.
