I read where some junior Japanese Naval officers wanted to press on towards India but they were over ruled for the Midway operation. Fwiw, the Aleutian Island feint was a dud.

If the Japanese had pressed on towards India/Africa, who knows how things would have turned out. There couldn’t have been much sea borne opposition in that theatre of operations.

Yeah it was a dud alright but not exactly a feint. Paranoia on the part of Imperial Headquarters drove that operation. Attack and/or invasion moving through that sector was a known theory on both sides. We had discarded that as a line of advance quite a while back but the Japs had no way of knowing that - their lack of securing definitive intel to verify one way or the other was creating sleepless nights for some in Tokyo, so they pulled the trigger to occupy. That also would have been a primo, though miserable, base to harass lend-lease shipping to Siberia once the Red Army had worked their way east enough to join in the Pacific fun. Another strategic blunder that drained resources for their war effort is all that amounted to.
