The endgame was US war with Russia, with the casus bellorum provided by people in Ukraine acting in their own interest.
Now, the Ukrainians working this angle had allies in the US State and Defense departments. The "let's you and him fight" crowd never had total control of policy (Victoria Nuland I'm looking at you) but internal power dynamics at State were definitely involved.
There was plenty of precedent for the US armed forces being fooled (seduced is probably a better word) into taking on enemies of other countries by disguising their self-interest as us fighting for "freedom" or "democracy".
The color revolution, the Maidan events, the installation of a Deep State friendly government went smoothly.
Insuring the election of HRC was a step too far - but it was a near run thing, with results still not totally known - although I believe things are looking up at last.
