‘I never felt like I belonged in the U.S.,’ says 62-year-old who fled to Bali

At age 60, she wasn’t entirely sure where Bali was. By age 62, she was living there.

Sherry Bronson, now 69, spent much of her life in Minnesota, where she raised three daughters and worked in real estate. But she didn’t love it: “I have hated the weather in Minnesota since I was a child,” she says. So in 2010, when her oldest daughter, who was teaching in South Korea, asked her to come to Bali so they could celebrate Sherry’s 60th birthday together, Sherry — after, she recalls with a laugh, Googling “Where’s Bali?” — jumped at the chance.

It didn’t disappoint: “The first thing that struck me as I got off the plane was the air — it was chewable, humid and warm with a scent of incense,” she says. “It was sweet and spicy and magical.” The next morning, she awoke to roosters crowing and the swooshing sound of a woman sweeping flower petals that had fallen in the night.

I salute her choice. America, love it or leave it, is a Nation where people work. It is in the bloodstream. Show me an American man who doesn’t love being busy at work, or his hobbies, and I will show you an American slacker. The American slacker wishes to live and work like they do in Europe, or in Bali, but with more internet time. I wish all American slackers would go to Bali, it would be better for us all, and them too.

I feel rather sorry for her. She’s been searching for happiness for a long time and it’s been elusive for her. That’s really sad.

If Bali makes her happy that late in life, all the more power to her!

Yeah, FIVE is a bit much. You have to question the sanity of husbands #3, #4, and #5, too. Especially #5. Given her effort to keep living costs down, I’d guess alimony payments are not much.

I don’t have a beef with her at all either. I respect people who go into the whole ex-pat thing with their eyes open, but I suspect there are more than a few who don’t understand the potential downsides.

Yes. She readily acknowledges the problems of health care and the climate during monsoon season. You have to hand it to her — learning a new language and becoming conversant in it is a HUGE undertaking so late in life. She clearly understands the culture there and how bad it is to be seen as a surly, unfriendly person.

Kudos to her! Few of us have the courage to do what she did.

Now if we could remove those 30 million fraudulently documented foreigners who broke in....... ]

I have never understood people who spend significant time in a foreign country and never learn the language.

At my age, I would have trouble learning a new language, but I can assure you, I sure would try.

How could you live in a country otherwise? We have plenty of people here who do that, and we cater to them. I don’t mind helping out, but catering to them and discouraging them from learning the language is a mistake. (Not to the Left, of course)

Cut them off from jobs, benefits, housing, banking, etc. and they will get the message.

The weather may be tough for some, too, says Bronson, noting that the months from October through March are hot and humid with heavy rains

She'll be back one day. Who the hell wants hot and hellish humidity 6 months a year?

Not me! Been there done that...Never again.

” the air — it was chewable, humid and warm”

That's how I felt getting off an aircraft in Texas years ago and once when I visited Florida. My freaking sunglasses kept fogging over while I'm dripping sweat!.

My driver said I'd get used to it, and I told him, I wouldn't be there that long...Couldn't get out fast enough.

Have read sailing blogs of a few who have visited Bali. There are highlands were the temps are more moderate.

If she would have stated that she still misses the U.S., it never would have made the news.

She’ll find Indonesia is actually a VERY CONSERVATIVE country, and judging by the pictures, she’ll be seeing the inside of a jail cell sooner than later.

At that point she’ll realize that all her fears regarding Trump are actually true...but they don’t apply to Trump, they apply to leaders of other countries.
